What Do Motor Oil Viscosity Ratings Mean?

It’s important to remember that viscosity just refers to the thickness of liquid, so that will help you understand the types of motor oil. Keeping your engine and all of the coordinating parts running smoothly requires the correct weight, or viscosity, and amount of oil. When oil is too thin, it doesn’t work properly to coat the parts. Oil that’s too viscous, or thick, causes your engine to overwork.

The numbers on a multi-grade bottle of motor oil indicate what its viscosity is in cold and hot weather. For instance, a 5W30 indicates the viscosity in cold weather can’t go above 5. The W means winter. The 30 is representative of the oil’s viscosity when the engine’s warm or it’s hot outside. It is appropriate to have thinner oil for cold conditions and more viscosity for warm circumstances.
