Mercer, PA is a great place to live for many reasons. There is plenty to do throughout the year, but we particularly love the warm summer months. If you’re wondering how to best enjoy your summer with your family, you’re in the right place. Keep reading to discover our favorite summer activities that are within driving distance of the borough.

1. Exploring Maurice K. Goddard State Park

You can’t go wrong exploring Maurice K. Goddard State Park at 684 Lake Wilhelm Road. This 2,856-acre state park is loved by boaters and anglers because it is home to Lake Wilhelm, a 1,680-acre body of water. There are plenty of land-based activities you can enjoy, but we recommend attaching your 20 hp motorboat to your 2023 Ford F-150 and spending a day on the water.

One of the most popular land-based activities you can enjoy in Maurice K. Goddard State Park is hiking. This state park features 16 miles of trails that wind through beautiful open fields and wildlife-filled forests. You can explore easy, moderate, or difficult trails, including the moderate loop trail known as Falling Run Nature Trail. Another popular trail is a 12-mile multi-purpose loop trail featuring:

  • Benches
  • Picnic tables
  • Modern restrooms

2. Getting a Unique Perspective of the Borough at Skydive Pennsylvania

If you’re a thrill-seeker, you will love skydiving at Skydive Pennsylvania at 496 Old Ash Rd. Here, you can go on the adventure of a lifetime within an hour of walking through the door. If you have never been skydiving before, you can go tandem skydiving with an experienced skydiver with over two decades of experience.

3. Touring Keystone Safari

We also recommend touring Keystone Safari at 2284 Mercer Butler Pike if you want to enjoy a fun day in the sun. There is plenty to explore here, but we strongly recommend the Drive-Thru Safari. You can ride in an ex-military vehicle from the 70s and get an up-close look at over 100 wild animals, including llamas, American bison, and water buffalo.

We also recommend zip-lining to get a bird’s-eye view of the animals that live here, including reindeer. If you feel you can confidently tackle obstacles, we recommend the moderate course.

There is no dearth of opportunities for summer fun in the Mercer area if you have a truck you can count on. However, you must remember to bring your truck in for routine maintenance to keep it operating as it should for hundreds of thousands of miles to come. If it’s been at least six months since your last oil change, contact us today at Bill McCandless Ford to schedule a service appointment.
